Drone Mapping
On Friday, September 20th, Wade Leonard successfully conducted a drone survey of parts of our lake, capturing images of areas affected by Eurasian Watermilfoil (EWM). This survey is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to understand the extent of EWM infiltration in our lake. Click here to see pictures and a video.
A heartfelt thank you to all members who participated in this initiative and to those who generously allowed us to use their docks as launch points for the drone. Your support and collaboration are invaluable to the success of our efforts in preserving the health of Palmerston Lake. A huge thank you also to Wade and the “Above and Beyond with Drones” program at Granite Ridge Education Center.
Over the coming months, Wade and his students will analyze the drone images and create a detailed map illustrating the extent of EWM in our lake. This map will provide us with valuable insights to guide future actions and strategies for managing EWM. We will update you on Wade’s findings when we receive them.
We will provide information on next steps and how you can get involved once we have had the opportunity to study the data and determine the best course of action.
The yellow caution markers that were placed around a significant patch of EWM at the southwest end of the lake are being removed for the winter. We will be putting them out again in the spring. We will also be evaluating the need for placing markers around any other significant patches that may be identified through the drone mapping.
Thank you once again for your continued support and participation in our endeavors to protect and preserve Palmerston Lake.
